When Would You Still Trench on a Coastal Lot?
Rarely, and Sloan Underground Construction will say so when it applies. A trench can make sense for a very short run in open sand with nothing above it — a meter that sits a few feet from the foundation, for example — or on a new-construction lot that is being graded anyway and has no landscaping, irrigation, or hardscape to protect yet. It can also be the right call when the failure point is already exposed and a spot repair of one section is all the line needs.
Even then, the water table sets the rule. If the trench would sit below the seasonal water level, dewatering turns a cheap dig into an expensive one, and the bore is back to being the better bid. On an established island lot with an HOA, a trench is almost never the answer.
Why Coastal Service Lines Fail
Salt air and a wet, slightly acidic sandy soil are hard on metal. Galvanized steel lines on older island homes corrode from the outside in and the inside out at once; copper pits in aggressive soil; and the mechanical couplings on older plastic lines work loose as saturated sand shifts around them. The failure usually shows up as a soft, always-wet patch of lawn that never dries between rains, a meter that creeps with every fixture off, or a bill that climbs for no reason. When the material is the problem, a spot repair buys months; a continuous HDPE replacement buys decades.
What Changes About the Pipe and the Depth on the Coast?

- Shallow frost depth, but not shallow pipe. The Lowcountry frost line is shallow compared with the Upstate, so the code minimum burial is less. The bore is still run deep enough to clear irrigation lines, landscape lighting, and root systems, and to keep the line out of anything a future planting bed might disturb.
- Route planning around the septic and irrigation fields. Island lots pack a lot into the ground.
