Terraced Lake Lots Have Several Walls in a Row
On Lake Keowee, Lake Hartwell, and the steeper Upstate and mountain lots, a service line from the meter to the house or from the house to the dock can cross two, three, or four walls. Trenching means opening every one of them; a single bore passes under all of them in one pull.
HOA and ARB Rules Often Forbid It
Lake and mountain communities with architectural review boards frequently restrict surface disturbance to hardscape, slopes, and common areas. A trench through a wall can require approvals, restoration bonds, and a rebuilt wall to the community’s spec. A bore with two small pits usually clears review without any of that.
A Trench on a Slope Is an Erosion Channel
Retaining walls exist because the ground is steep. An open trench running down that grade becomes a channel for the next storm until the backfill settles and the grass takes — and the fill it washes out is the fill the wall was counting on.
How Does the Bore Go Under the Wall, Step by Step?
The bore goes below the footing and below the drainage zone, with margin, from one side of the wall to the other. Sloan Underground Construction runs the job in this order:
- Locate the old line and the wall’s footing. The failed line is traced and its depth marked. The wall’s base depth is confirmed — a segmental block wall on a gravel base and a poured wall on a deep footing need different clearances.
- Call SC 811. Every other buried utility on the lot is located and flagged before any drilling. It’s free, it’s required, and on a terraced lot the electric, gas, and irrigation lines often share the same corridor.
- Plot the path. The bore is planned to pass beneath the footing and beneath the gravel drainage zone behind the wall with margin on both, then rise to service depth on the far side. Depth, entry angle, and exit point are set before the rig arrives.
- Dig two small pits. One on the uphill side of the wall, one on the downhill side — or beside the wall ends when the layout allows. That is the entire excavation.
- Drill the pilot bore. The Ditch Witch drills the steerable pilot path while the operator tracks the drill head from the surface, reading its depth as it passes under the wall.
- Ream and pull. The bore is reamed to size and a continuous length of HDPE is pulled back through — one piece, no joints buried under the wall.
- Connect and close. The new line is tied in at the meter and the house, pressure is checked, the two pits are backfilled and seeded, and the wall has not moved an inch.

Depth Is Decided Before the Rig Shows Up
The mistake to avoid is guessing at the footing. A bore that clips the base of a wall is worse than a trench. That’s why the footing depth is confirmed, the path is plotted below it and below the drainage zone with margin, and the drill head is tracked from the surface at every rod — the operator sees the depth under the wall in real time rather than hoping the path came out where the plan said.
What If the Old Line Runs Through the Wall Itself?
