Traditional utility installation requires continuous open-cut trenching — cutting through driveways, roads, landscaping, and hardscape for the entire length of the utility run. The installation is straightforward, but the surface damage and restoration costs are substantial.
Trenchless utility installation uses horizontal directional drilling to bore a steerable underground path between two small entry and exit pits. The utility line is attached to the drill head and pulled back through the completed bore. The surface above remains untouched.
For projects where the utility must cross under roads, driveways, creek beds, mature landscaping, parking lots, or existing structures, trenchless installation is faster, less expensive when restoration costs are factored in, and causes zero surface disruption. Water lines typically run 18-36 inches deep, gas lines 18-24 inches, electric conduit 18-24 inches (deeper for high-voltage), fiber and telecom 24-36 inches, and sewer lines follow gravity grade.
